2022 Goals: Peace of Mind Through Local Bookkeeping

Posted on by Sean Spencer

As a business owner, it’s not difficult to imagine how you might be able to enjoy greater peace of mind through local bookkeeping this year. After all, there are few better ways to feel confident about the future than by knowing what you have in the bank, and what it’s doing for you.

But why does it matter so much that it be local bookkeeping? Why not work with a national firm? That’s the question we’ll be exploring today.

Peace on Earth, or at Least in the Office

First, let’s consider why bookkeeping is such a big deal in the first place. There are some businesses out there that run on a day-to-day basis with cash only and very little recordkeeping. That may sound like paradise to some business owners who’ve had it up to here with all the paperwork. But that has never been a good way to sustain a growing business. It’s fine for the beachside bar at a tropical resort, but not for a business that deals with complicated contracts and logistics.

As soon as any business grows to the point where it’s beginning to make deals with suppliers on credit, careful accounting becomes essential. For some companies, that stage may occur right from the starting gate. Others may go years before deciding to grow to that level. Either way, once you’re there, you need bookkeeping to help keep track of transactions. Those arrangements are too important to lose track of. You have to be able to know who has been paid for what items, and whether they’re already in your inventory. Likewise, if your clients buy your services on contract, you need to be aware of which ones are current in their payments.

Having that information in your financial ledgers lets you operate your business with far greater peace of mind.

Staying Close to Home

Aside from the primary benefits of bookkeeping itself, you can also have peace of mind through local bookkeeping precisely because of its local characteristics. Working with a local bookkeeping firm means working with people you know. You can visit their office and see how they do things. You can take them out to lunch, and they can treat you likewise. Working with agents from a national firm, who may be based in an office that you can’t practically drive to for business purposes, doesn’t provide any such advantage.

The significance of this local power is that you maintain clear oversight and accountability for your books, even though they aren’t being updated in your own office each day. It’s a perfect compromise. By handing the books off to a local bookkeeping firm, you enjoy all the benefits of scale that the firm provides. They save you the trouble of hiring new staff and finding office space for them, plus all the time and trouble behind compensating them. The local firm gives you everything you need for a consolidated price that’s a great deal less than doing everything in-house.

And yet, they’re still close enough to have face-to-face meetings as often as needed. Sure, communications technology has dramatically reduced the need for those kinds of meetings, but they’re still a useful part of doing business. You want to be free to see and hear and shake the hands of the people responsible for managing your company’s money. It’s a question of trust.
